Clean Water for All

Water is essential, water is life. Many people still do not have access to clean water in remote and poor communities in Bangladesh. The women, children and the elderly suffer the most from the water crisis.

Giving water is one of the best forms of service to the needy that one can provide. This is Sadaqah Jariya, providing a lifeline that keeps on giving water to needy communities.

BASMAH has built hundreds of clean water wells that are providing free clean water to poor and needy people in the remote communities in Bangladesh.

The cost of water wells varies

Depending on the condition of the location. In normal/plain districts in Bangladesh, the groundwater can be accessed at a reasonable depth which varies from 150-200 feet. The cost for installing a tube well in the plain districts is about $250. In cyclone-affected and coastal districts the situation is quite different.

To access fresh groundwater, multiple boring testing is required to avoid saline water. The coastal districts often have salinity problems when it comes to reaching groundwater levels. Also, some measures are needed to put in place against the future intrusion of salinity in the tube well system. Generally, at a higher depth, fresh water can be found.

To access such a fresh groundwater table, the depth required is from 200- 300 feet. The cost for installing a tube well in the flood-prone of coastal districts is $500. In the Rohingya refugee camp, the topography is altogether very different from the plain or coastal regions.

The entire Rohingya refugee camp is situated in Cox’s Bazar district which is beside sea- the Bay of Bengal. The region is hilly and medium to high mountains surround the area. On one hand, finding the right groundwater layer is very difficult on the other hand, the government has strict regulations for which many approvals are required to install a tube well in that region.

As such in the Rohingya refugee camp, the cost for installation of a tube well is $ 2500.
