Fire Rage in Rohingya Camp

Flames of Crisis, Hands of Hope

Humanitarian crises often strike without warning, turning fragile lives upside down in an instant. For BASMAH, the mission is simple: when disaster hits, we act. We donโ€™t just send aid; we send hope. On March 21, 2021, that mission was put to the ultimate test when a massive fire tore through the Balukhali Camp 8W and Camp 1 in Coxโ€™s Bazar, Bangladesh. For the Rohingya refugees living there, life was already a daily struggle for survival. Then, at around 3 PM, smoke began to billow into the sky. Within moments, the crackle of burning bamboo turned into a roar. When fire consumes homes, BASMAH delivers reliefโ€”and on that day, our teams were among the first on the ground to stand with those who had lost everything.

The Devastating Fire Tragedy

The fire that raged through the camps was swift and merciless. Fueled by strong winds and the highly flammable materials of the sheltersโ€”mostly bamboo and tarpaulinโ€”the flames jumped from one roof to the next with terrifying speed. The devastation was staggering. Reports confirmed that over 11 people were burnt to death, a tragic number that was expected to rise as the ashes cooled. But the toll wasnโ€™t just in lives lost; it was in the complete erasure of sanctuary. More than 15,000 houses were reduced to cinders, leaving tens of thousands of people homeless under the open sky. Imagine fleeing your homeland to escape persecution, only to watch your makeshift refuge burn to the ground. For the Rohingya families, many of whom are widows, orphans, and the elderly, this was a catastrophe on top of a crisis. They stood amidst the ruins, vulnerable and desperate, wondering where their next meal or sip of water would come from.

BASMAHโ€™s Immediate On-Ground Action

While the embers were still glowing, BASMAHโ€™s volunteer teams were already mobilizing. We understand that in a disaster of this scale, speed saves lives. Our teams deployed rapidly to the affected zones, navigating the chaos to bring immediate relief to the victims. We focused on the most urgent needs: food to fight hunger, clean water to quench thirst, and essential items to provide a shred of dignity. The scene was heartbreakingโ€”families huddled together, children crying for water, and the air thick with smoke and despair. Reaching thousands of people in such a short window required immense coordination and dedication. Our support didnโ€™t stop at the initial response. We remained committed to helping survivors endure the aftermath, ensuring that the most vulnerableโ€”especially the thousands of orphans we support across the campsโ€”were not forgotten in the chaos.
Iโ€™m on the advisory board of this great organization, Basmah. And Iโ€™m saying to you, from a man on the inside, they do a lot of incredible work. Iโ€™m amazed every day by more and more work; they donโ€™t stop, they never stop.

Your Sadaqah Rebuilds Lives

When you see images of fire ravaging a refugee camp, itโ€™s easy to feel helpless. But your faith empowers you to act. Your Sadaqah and Zakat are not just donations; they are lifelines.
Every dollar you give translates directly into relief for a family in pain.

  • $10 can provide a meal for a child who hasnโ€™t eaten in days.
  • $50 helps support families with essential supplies to restart their lives.
  • $100 or $500 makes a major difference, funding shelter or medical aid for the injured.

As the Prophet (PBUH) said, โ€œGive charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.โ€ Your charity quenches the thirst of the parched and feeds the fire-ravaged. It turns the ashes of despair into the foundation of hope.
Donate now to stand with Rohingya survivors.

Rising from Ruins

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our generous supporters. It is because of youโ€”our donors who seek the pleasure of Allahโ€”that BASMAH can operate on the frontlines of tragedies like the Balukhali fire. You are the reason a mother has milk for her child today; you are the reason a family has a roof over their heads tonight. The scars of the fire will take time to heal, but BASMAH remains ready for every crisis in the camps. Whether it is fire, flood, or hunger, we will continue to serve the Ummah with compassion and speed. Together, we can help our brothers and sisters rise from the ruins.
