The Importance of Charity in Islam
Introduction
A means of purifying wealth
Islam emphasizes the importance of earning a halal (lawful) income and using it for good. Giving charity is a way to purify oneโs wealth and rid it of any impurities that may have come with it. It is also a way to show gratitude to Allah for the blessings He has bestowed upon us.
A way to help those in need
Charity is a means of helping those who are less fortunate. It is a way to share our blessings with others and to alleviate their suffering. In Islam, charity is not limited to monetary donations, but can also include donating oneโs time, skills, or knowledge to help others.
A source of blessings and reward
In Islam, giving charity is considered a virtuous act that brings numerous blessings and rewards. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, โCharity does not decrease wealthโ (Sahih Muslim). This means that giving charity does not decrease oneโs wealth, but rather increases it in the long run. Additionally, Allah promises great rewards for those who give charity. He says in the Quran, โThe example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowingโ (2:261).
A way to earn forgiveness and atone for sins
Charity is also a means of seeking forgiveness and atoning for sins. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, โCharity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fireโ (Sunan Ibn Majah). By giving charity, one can seek forgiveness for their sins and earn the pleasure of Allah.
