BASMAH's Rapid Response to the Container Depot Tragedy, June 2022

It started with a spark in the middle of the night, but within moments, the BM Inland Container Depot near Chittagong was engulfed in a disaster of unimaginable scale. Explosions shook the ground for miles, shattering windows and devastating families. When man-made tragedies like this strike, the chaos can feel overwhelming. But for BASMAH, chaos is a call to action. In June 2022, a massive fire fueled by chemical containers claimed over 49 livesโ€”including brave firefightersโ€”and left more than 100 people severely injured. As hospitals overflowed and families frantically searched for loved ones, the BASMAH team didnโ€™t wait. We mobilized immediately, proving that when our community hurts, we are there to heal. This is the story of how your compassion fueled a rapid response mission that brought hope to the victims of the Sitakunda fire.

The Night the Sky Burned

The fire at the container depot wasnโ€™t just a local accident; it was a national tragedy. The blaze, intensified by hydrogen peroxide containers, raged for two nights. The initial explosion was so powerful it was heard kilometers away, and the subsequent fires made rescue efforts incredibly dangerous. For the families living nearby and the workers on site, the world turned upside down in an instant. The human toll was heartbreaking. Breadwinners were lost, young men suffered life-altering burns, and homes were damaged by the shockwaves. The hospitals in Chittagong were overwhelmed, struggling to treat the influx of burn victims with limited resources.

BASMAHโ€™s Swift On-Ground Action

While the embers were still glowing, BASMAHโ€™s ground team was already moving. Understanding that the first few days are critical in any disaster, we deployed volunteers to the affected area and local hospitals immediately. Our primary goal was to identify the real victimsโ€”the families who had lost everything and the injured who needed urgent medical and financial support. Our team visited the burn units, offering not just financial aid, but emotional support to families paralyzed by grief. We distributed immediate cash assistance to help families cover emergency medical costs, buy food, and manage the sudden loss of income. But we knew emergency aid was just the beginning. Our team conducted comprehensive assessments to ensure that the most vulnerable victims received sustained support through our ongoing campaigns.
Iโ€™m on the advisory board of this great organization, Basmah. And Iโ€™m saying to you, from a man on the inside, they do a lot of incredible work. Iโ€™m amazed every day by more and more work; they donโ€™t stop, they never stop.

Impact That Saves Lives

Because of the swift generosity of our donors, BASMAH was able to make a tangible difference in the midst of this crisis. Here is how your support translated into action on the ground:

  • Emergency Financial Aid: We provided direct financial support to dozens of victimsโ€™ families, allowing them to purchase medicine and essential supplies immediately.
  • Hospital Support: Our volunteers were present in the hospitals, bridging the gap for patients who couldnโ€™t afford specialized burn treatments.
  • Sustained Recovery: Beyond the initial relief, we launched a campaign to help survivors rebuild their lives and livelihoods after recovering from their injuries.

This response is part of BASMAHโ€™s broader commitment to emergency relief. From flood response to fire tragedies, we have supported over 177,000 people in emergency situations between 2021 and 2024. Whether it is providing 971,990+ meals to the hungry or treating nearly half a million patients across our medical centers, BASMAH stands ready to serve the Ummah whenever crisis strikes.

Your Sadaqah is a Lifeline

Tragedies like the Chittagong fire remind us of the fragility of life, but they also remind us of the power of unity. When we come together as an Ummah, our collective Sadaqah becomes a shield for the vulnerable.
The victims of this fire face a long road to recovery. Burn rehabilitation is painful and expensive, and families who lost their primary earners face an uncertain future. Your donation acts as a lifeline.

  • $50 can provide crucial support for a family in desperate need.
  • $100 helps make a significant difference to affected communities.
  • $500 extends a strong helping hand to those struggling to rebuild their lives.

As the Prophet (PBUH) said, โ€œThe believerโ€™s shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.โ€ (Tirmidhi). By turning your compassion into action, you arenโ€™t just sending money; you are sending hope, dignity, and a message that they are not forgotten.

Compassion in Action

We are deeply grateful to every supporter who enabled our team to act swiftly during the Sitakunda fire. Your trust allows our volunteers to perform ground-level work that saves lives.
However, emergency relief is an ongoing need. Bangladesh faces frequent natural and man-made disasters, and BASMAH remains committed to being the first responder for the helpless. Whether it is a fire in a container depot or floods in Sylhet, we stand ready.
Will you stand with us? Donate now to help BASMAH reach more victims and be the hope they are praying for.
