Why Your Heart Beats Faster When Muharram Comes
You feel it, donโt you?
Something stirs โ quiet at first, then louder. A pull deep inside your chest, like the tide answering the moon. That is not coincidence. That is not emotion. That is your fitrah โ your God-given nature โ recognizing the holiest air of the Islamic year, whispering to you that something sacred has arrived.
I have spent fifty years walking alongside Muslim families in their moments of giving. Fifty Muharrams. Fifty seasons of watching ordinary people do extraordinary things. I have seen a widow give her last savings to feed Rohingya children she would never meet. I have seen a teenage boy sprint to the masjid on the Day of Ashura with coins in his fist and tears on his face. I have seen barakah โ real, tangible, life-altering barakah โ pour into homes that chose Allah over comfort.
What I have never seen is someone regret giving for His sake. Not once. Not ever.
What Makes Muharram So Special? The Answer Will Move You
Allah created twelve months. Twelve. And from those twelve, He handpicked four as sacred โ Al-Ashhur Al-Hurum. Muharram stands among them, crowned as the Month of Allah. Not the month of kings. Not the month of nations. The month of Allah Himself.
The name โMuharramโ carries weight that English can barely hold. It means forbidden โ yes โ but it is the kind of forbiddance that feels like shelter. Fighting is forbidden. Grudges are forbidden. The pettiness that gnaws at brotherhood is forbidden. In its place, Allah lays out a banquet of mercy, forgiveness, and nearness.
He is saying, in the most tender way: Come to Me. The table is ready. Do not come late.
How many of us have missed this invitation, year after year, distracted by the noise of dunya? This Muharram, let us finally answer.
The Day That Changed Everything: Ashura's Astonishing Legacy
The 10th of Muharram is not merely a date. It is a monument to divine rescue.
Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) stood at the edge of the Red Sea โ cornered, breathless, Pharaohโs army thundering behind him. Nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide. And then โ with a single command from Allah โ the sea parted. Not a crack. Not a trickle. Two walls of surging water, standing still like obedient servants, making way for the believers.
Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him), after months adrift on a world swallowed by flood, felt solid earth beneath his ark on this very day. The relief of that moment โ centuries of faith vindicated in a single landing โ defies description.
And we remember Husayn ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), the grandson of our beloved Prophet ๏ทบ, who gave everything โ everything โ on this day to preserve the dignity of truth. His sacrifice is not a tragedy to mourn passively. It is a blazing torch, urging us to ask: what are we willing to stand for?
Three stories. One day. Endless lessons.
The Secret Formula: How Humble Actions Become Eternal Harvests
Here is something that stunned me when I first truly understood it:
Every act of worship during Muharram does not just earn reward. It multiplies it.
The Prophet ๏ทบ told us that fasting on the Day of Ashura expiates the sins of an entire year. One day. One fast. An entire year of shortcomings, wiped clean like morning dew off a leaf. That alone should make us tremble with gratitude.
Now layer sadaqah on top.
Feed a fasting person. Sponsor an orphanโs meal. Send clean water to a family in a Rohingya camp in Coxโs Bazar. These acts, already beloved by Allah at any time, become supercharged during His sacred month. It is like planting seeds in the most fertile soil on earth, in the most perfect season โ and then letting Allah be the Farmer.
I know a twelve-year-old boy who saved two months of pocket money. On Ashura, he walked into a local masjid food drive and handed over every riyal. His mother called me weeks later, voice cracking. New blessings had arrived at their door โ health, opportunity, peace โ things money cannot simply purchase. He planted. Allah watered.
That is how sadaqah works. That is how Muharram amplifies it.
When Life Feels Unbearable: Muharram's Quiet Healing
Are you exhausted? Genuinely, bone-deep exhausted โ from problems that never seem to end, from prayers you fear may not be heard, from the strange loneliness of struggling in silence?
Are you carrying shame? Sins that feel too heavy, too ugly, too many? The voice that says Allah could never love you โ not after everything?
Listen. Please listen carefully.
Muharram was designed for exactly this. For the tired. For the ashamed. For the lost. Allah did not make this month sacred for the spiritually perfect. He made it sacred for the rest of us โ the ones who keep falling and keep trying, the ones whose hearts still ache for Him even when they stumble.
His message through this month is not complicated: I have not forgotten you. Come back. I am still here.

Five Steps to Transform Your Life This Muharram
Step One: Speak to Allah Like He Is Listening โ Because He Is
Five minutes every morning. Just five. Tell Him what frightens you. Thank Him for what you overlook. Confess what embarrasses you. Ask for what feels impossible. No script, no performance. Just you and your Rabb, the way a child talks to a father who loves them without condition.
Step Two: Give Something โ Anything โ Every Single Day
You do not need wealth to give sadaqah. You need intention.
- $1 toward clean water for a Rohingya family
- $10 to clothe two children during winter
- $45 to sponsor an orphan for a month through BASMAHโs Orphan Care program
- A duโa made sincerely for a stranger in pain
Allah looks at your heart, not your bank balance. A taxi driver I know gives two dollars every day during Muharram. โIt is my love letter to Allah,โ he told me, shrugging like it was the most obvious thing in the world. He is not wrong.
Step Three: Fast on Ashura โ Then Break Your Fast Beside Someone Who Needs It
Mark the 10th of Muharram. Fast from dawn to dusk. And when that fast ends, do not break it alone. Feed someone. Invite a neighbor. Send an iftar box to a family at the Rohingya camps in Coxโs Bazar. When your stomach growls with hunger, your heart opens in empathy. That opening โ that is where barakah enters.
Step Four: Remember the Ummah in Every Duโa
Our brothers and sisters in Palestine. In Syria. In Myanmar. The 1.3 million Rohingya refugees still living in bamboo-and-plastic shelters stretched across thirteen square kilometers of Coxโs Bazar, waiting. Every night, lift your hands and say their names to Allah. They need your duโa as much as your dirhams. When one limb of the Ummah aches, the whole body stirs โ and Muharram is precisely when that stirring bears the most weight.
Step Five: Purify the Interior โ The Step Everyone Skips
External deeds without internal renewal are like a beautiful house with a broken foundation. This Muharram, do the harder work. Forgive the person you have been refusing to forgive. Apologize to the one you wronged. Abandon the habit that dims your light. Your heart is Allahโs mirror. When you polish it, His love reflects back with startling clarity.
The Barakah That Never Ends: Your Investment in Akhirah
Here is the most astonishing arithmetic in all of existence:
Sadaqah Jariyah does not stop growing when you stop. It keeps working long after your hands have gone still.
One woman donated $250 to build a water well in rural Bangladesh through BASMAH. That well now serves hundreds of families โ daily. Every sip of clean water taken from that well earns her a reward in her book of deeds, continuously, without pause. She is in Jannah now, inshaโAllah, still collecting rewards for water flowing from a well she never physically touched.
That is the alchemy of giving in Allahโs sacred month. Not charity โ legacy.
BASMAH has built over 4,444 tube wells since its founding. Nearly half a million patients treated. Almost a million meals distributed. 955 homes constructed for the homeless and displaced. Every one of those actions, originating from a donorโs sadaqah, continues flowing like living water โ unstoppable, multiplying, filling accounts in the Akhirah that no earthly inflation can ever diminish.
This is your investment opportunity. No market risk. No interest haram. Just Allahโs guarantee: โWhatever good you put forward for yourselves โ you will find it with Allah.โ (Quran 2:110)
The Urgent Call: Why This Muharram Cannot Be Deferred
I have watched people make the most expensive mistake in spiritual life. They say: next year.
Next year I will fast properly. Next year I will give generously. Next year I will change. And then next year arrives, wearing the same excuses in fresh clothing.
My dear brother. My dear sister. None of us owns next year.
Right now, as you read these words, there is a child in Camp 14 of the Rohingya refugee settlements who has not eaten a proper meal today. There is a widow in Rangpur whose winter nights are spent shivering under cloth too thin for the cold. There is an orphan in Narayanganj attending BASMAHโs learning center, learning Quranic Arabic with bright eyes and an empty stomach.
Your sadaqah today is the answer to someoneโs duโa made yesterday.
What if Allah has been waiting โ specifically, patiently โ for you to take this step? What if this Muharram is the pivot point, the before-and-after, the moment your life story turns toward something greater?
Do not make Him wait any longer.
Allah's Promise and Your Heart's True Home
He said it plainly, with a certainty that should settle every anxious heart:
โAnd whoever relies upon Allah โ then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose.โ (Quran 65:3)
Not โmight.โ Not โperhaps.โ Will. If you trust Him this Muharram โ if you fast, give, pray, forgive, and return to Him with a sincere heart โ He has already made His promise. Your affairs are in the best of hands.
As I close this letter to you, I am making duโa. For your familyโs health. For your debts to be eased. For your children to grow as lights of the Ummah. For your heart to find the peace it has been searching for in every wrong place.
You are not a stranger to me. You are my brother. My sister. My Ummah.
And this Muharram, we journey together โ back to the One who made us, who loves us, who is waiting at a door that never closes.
Take that first step. Give that first dollar. Make that first tearful duโa.
Your Jannah starts now.
May Allah accept our sadaqah, multiply our barakah, and grant us the company of the Prophet ๏ทบ in the highest gardens of Jannah. Ameen.
