RAMADAN KAREEM

RAMADAN KAREEM: Ramadan is the ninth month in the Muslim lunar calendar. Healthy adult Muslims fast in Ramadan from dawn until dusk. This includes abstaining from drinking, eating, immoral acts and anger. Other acts of worship such as prayer, reading the Quran and charity are also encouraged during the holy month. The fast of Ramadan is two pronged: Muslims abstain from food, drink, alcohol, drugs and sex to suspend their indulgence in worldly comforts. Adherents also refrain from lying, cheating, gossip, swearing and other bad deeds to cleanse the soul and practice virtue. Muslims partake in extended prayer, immersing themselves in spirituality and worship.

The social aspect of fasting in Ramadan is that the whole atmosphere is permeated with religious piety and devotion to Allah. There is one extra congregational prayer, Tarawih, during the night, in which the Qur’an is recited and the Muslim is reminded of the fact that it was in the month of Ramadan that the revelation of the Qur’an commenced. The sadaqqt are also given with greater zeal and fervour in this month. Thus the whole Muslim society is inspired by the love of Allah. Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: When Ramadan begins, the gates of Heaven are opened, the gates of Hell are locked, and the devils are chained (Bukhari and Muslim).

Ramadan 2021 and Covid: Mosques and other religions organizations have come up with innovative ways to help people prepare, and to keep them company, during Ramadan. People are required to wear masks and keep distance from each other while attending Mosque prayers. While vaccines are rolling out, many vaccination centers are only opened during the day times which leads to the question if taking vaccines going to break fast or not. Islamic scholars and doctors assured people that COVID-19 vaccines do not invalidate the fast [1][2][3] and are encouraged to participate take vaccination when it is available for them.
