Muharram 2025: Your Gateway to Allah's Mercy and Jannah

Muharram 2025: Your Gateway to Allah's Mercy and Jannah

The Sacred Month That Can Change Your Life Forever

Allah's Special Gift to Our Ummah

Imagine Allah choosing certain days to multiply your rewards. Imagine Him selecting specific months where your prayers carry extra weight. Imagine times when your good deeds shine brighter in His eyes. This isnโ€™t imagination โ€“ this is the reality of Muharram.
Muharram is the first month of our Islamic calendar. Itโ€™s like Allahโ€™s New Year gift to every Muslim. But itโ€™s not just any month โ€“ itโ€™s one of the four sacred months that Allah Himself chose as special. The word โ€œMuharramโ€ means โ€œforbidden,โ€ because in this holy month, even fighting was forbidden in the old days.
For us today, Muharram means opportunity. Itโ€™s your chance to start fresh with Allah. Your chance to earn rewards that will follow you to Jannah. Your chance to wipe away the mistakes of the past year and begin again with a clean heart.

When This Blessed Month Begins

In 2025, Muharram started on June 27th. Our Islamic calendar follows the moon, not the sun. So every year, Muharram comes about 11 days earlier than the previous year. This beautiful system means every season gets to experience the Barakah of this sacred month.
During Muharram, something amazing happens. Your good deeds arenโ€™t just good โ€“ theyโ€™re extra good. Allah multiplies your rewards. But be careful โ€“ your bad deeds also carry more weight. Itโ€™s like Allah is saying: โ€œThis is My special month. Use it wisely.โ€

The Most Important Days You Can't Miss

The First Day: Your Islamic New Year
The 1st of Muharram marks our Islamic New Year. While thereโ€™s no special prayer or ritual required, itโ€™s a perfect time to think about your life. Where were you last year? Where do you want to be next year? What kind of Muslim do you want to become?
This is when our Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) and the early Muslims made their historic journey from Makkah to Madinah. They left behind everything they knew to follow Allahโ€™s guidance. Their courage created the first Islamic state in 622 CE. Your new year can be the start of your own journey toward becoming a better Muslim.
The Day of Ashura: When Heaven Watches Earth
The 10th of Muharram is called the Day of Ashura. This day carries two major memories that every Muslim should know.
First, itโ€™s the day when Prophet Musa (Peace be Upon Him) and the Children of Israel were saved from Pharaohโ€™s army. Allah split the sea for them. They walked through on dry land while their enemies drowned behind them. It was a miracle that showed Allahโ€™s power to save those who trust Him.
Second, itโ€™s the day when Imam Hussain (Peace be Upon Him), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him), was killed in the Battle of Karbala. He stood up against injustice with only a small group of family and supporters. They were outnumbered, but they chose to die with honor rather than live under oppression.
Both events teach us the same lesson: Allah always supports those who stand for truth, even when itโ€™s difficult.

Why Allah Calls This "His Month"

Out of all twelve months in our calendar, only Muharram gets a special title. The Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) called it โ€œthe month of Allah.โ€ Think about that. Allah could have chosen any month, but He chose this one as His own.
A man once asked the Prophet (Peace be Upon Him): โ€œWhich fasting is better after Ramadan?โ€ The Prophet answered: โ€œThe month of Allah which is called Muharram.โ€
This wasnโ€™t just a casual recommendation. The Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) was telling us that after Ramadan, Muharram is the best month for fasting. Itโ€™s the month where your spiritual efforts get the highest rewards.
Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) said: โ€œThe most virtuous fasting after the month of Ramadan is that of Allahโ€™s month of Al-Muharram. And the most virtuous prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.โ€

Allah's Clear Command About Sacred Months

Allah says in the Quran: โ€œIndeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion [i.e., way], so do not wrong yourselves during them.โ€ [Quran 9:36]
Allah is giving us a direct warning here. During these four sacred months (Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qiโ€™dah, and Dhul-Hijjah), we must be extra careful about our actions. Donโ€™t wrong yourselves, Allah says. Donโ€™t waste these precious opportunities.
The Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) explained: โ€œThe year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three are in succession, namely, Dhul-Qiโ€™dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and (the fourth one) Rajab.โ€

Iโ€™m on the advisory board of this great organization, Basmah. And Iโ€™m saying to you, from a man on the inside, they do a lot of incredible work. Iโ€™m amazed every day by more and more work; they donโ€™t stop, they never stop.

How to Celebrate This Sacred Month

1. Fast on the Most Blessed Days
The best thing you can do in Muharram is fast on the 9th and 10th days. If you canโ€™t fast on the 9th, then fast on the 10th and 11th. These arenโ€™t just any fasts โ€“ theyโ€™re fasts that can wipe away a whole yearโ€™s worth of sins.
The Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) wanted to fast on the 9th of Muharram to make our fasting different from other communities. He said: โ€œNext year, if Allah wills, we will fast on the ninth day.โ€ Unfortunately, he passed away before the next year came, but his intention shows us how important this is.
The Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) also said: โ€œI never saw the Messenger of Allah so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of Ashura, and this month, meaning Ramadan.โ€
2. Read More Quran
If you canโ€™t fast for health reasons, donโ€™t worry. You can still earn amazing rewards by reading the Quran. Every letter you read in Muharram carries extra Barakah. Set a goal to read a certain number of pages each day. Make it your companion during this blessed month.
Remember, when you read Quran, youโ€™re not alone. Angels gather around you. Allahโ€™s mercy descends upon you. Your heart becomes cleaner with every verse.
3. Give Regular Sadaqah
Muharram is the perfect time to start giving regular charity. Itโ€™s the beginning of the Islamic year, so itโ€™s like making a spiritual resolution. Decide to give a small amount every month. Even 50 taka monthly can change someoneโ€™s life and earn you continuous rewards.
Your Sadaqah in Muharram doesnโ€™t just help others โ€“ it protects you. The Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) said: โ€œSadaqah extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.โ€
4. Make Extra Dhikr
Remember Allah more during this month. Say โ€œSubhanAllah,โ€ โ€œAlhamdulillah,โ€ and โ€œAllahu Akbarโ€ throughout your day. These simple words carry enormous rewards, especially in sacred months.
When youโ€™re walking, remember Allah. When youโ€™re waiting for the bus, remember Allah. When youโ€™re lying in bed before sleep, remember Allah. Let your tongue be moist with His remembrance.
5. Pray Night Prayers
The Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) said the most virtuous prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer. During Muharram, try to wake up for Tahajjud, even if itโ€™s just for two rakahs. This is when Allah comes closest to the earth and asks: โ€œWho is calling Me so I can answer? Who is asking Me so I can give?โ€

The Tragedy That Shook the Ummah

On the 10th of Muharram in the 61st year of the Islamic calendar, something terrible happened. Imam Hussain (Peace be Upon Him), the grandson of our beloved Prophet (Peace be Upon Him), was killed in the Battle of Karbala.
Hussain was facing Yazid, an unjust ruler who had a huge army. Hussain had only 72 supporters, including his family members. They were surrounded, cut off from water, and given a choice: submit to injustice or die.
Hussain chose death over dishonor. He chose to stand for whatโ€™s right, even when it meant losing everything. His sacrifice teaches us that some principles are worth dying for. Truth, justice, and standing up to oppression are values that define what it means to be Muslim.
When we remember this tragedy on Ashura, weโ€™re not just remembering history. Weโ€™re learning lessons. Weโ€™re promising to stand up for justice in our own lives. Weโ€™re committing to be brave when facing our own challenges.

The Rewards Waiting for You

Fasting Rewards
When you fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, Allah doesnโ€™t just give you reward for two days. He forgives an entire yearโ€™s worth of sins. Imagine that! All your small mistakes, your moments of weakness, your times of forgetfulness โ€“ all wiped clean.
The Prophet (Peace be Upon Him) said: โ€œFasting the day of Ashura, I hope Allah will accept it to expiate the sins of the year that came before it.โ€

Prayer Rewards

Your prayers in Muharram carry extra weight. Your duas are more likely to be accepted. Your night prayers bring you closer to Allah. Your regular five daily prayers become more meaningful.

Charity Rewards

Your Sadaqah in Muharram grows like seeds planted in fertile soil. Every taka you give becomes a tree of good deeds. Every act of kindness becomes a mountain of rewards. Every person you help becomes a reason for Allah to help you.

Dhikr Rewards

Your remembrance of Allah in this sacred month echoes in the heavens. Angels carry your praises to Allahโ€™s throne. Your heart becomes cleaner with every โ€œSubhanAllah.โ€ Your soul becomes brighter with every โ€œAlhamdulillah.โ€

Simple Ways to Make the Most of Muharram

Start Small, Think Big
Donโ€™t try to change everything at once. Pick one or two things to focus on:

  • Fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram
  • Give 100 taka in charity
  • Read one page of Quran daily
  • Say 100 times โ€œSubhanAllahโ€ each day
  • Pray two rakahs before sleeping

Make It a Family Affair
Involve your family in your Muharram activities. Fast together. Read Quran together. Give charity together. When children see their parents taking this month seriously, they learn to value it too.
Tell your children the story of Ashura. Explain why we fast. Share the lessons of standing up for truth. These conversations create memories that last a lifetime.
Connect with Your Community
Visit your local mosque more often during Muharram. Attend Islamic lectures. Join charity drives. Participate in community iftars. When the Ummah comes together, the Barakah multiplies.
Make Dua for the Ummah
Remember your Muslim brothers and sisters around the world. Pray for those suffering in Palestine, Syria, Myanmar, and elsewhere. Your duas in the sacred month carry extra power. Allah hears them and responds.

The Danger of Wasting This Month

Sacred months are like special exams in school. If you do well, you get high marks. If you do poorly, you lose big opportunities. Allah warns us not to wrong ourselves during these months.
Every day of Muharram that passes without good deeds is a missed opportunity. Every night that passes without prayer is a lost chance. Every moment that passes without remembering Allah is time that could have earned you Jannah.
Donโ€™t let this month pass like an ordinary month. Donโ€™t treat these sacred days like regular days. Theyโ€™re gifts from Allah that come once a year. Use them wisely.

Your Action Plan for Muharram

Week 1: Preparation

  • Set your intentions for the month
  • Plan your fasting days
  • Decide on your charity amount
  • Download a Quran app for daily reading

Week 2: Building Habits

  • Start your daily Quran reading
  • Begin your regular Sadaqah
  • Increase your Dhikr
  • Try waking up for Tahajjud

Week 3: The Sacred Days

  • Fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram
  • Make extra dua on these days
  • Read the story of Ashura
  • Reflect on the lessons of sacrifice

Week 4: Continuing the Journey

  • Maintain the habits youโ€™ve built
  • Plan to continue them after Muharram
  • Share your experiences with others
  • Thank Allah for the opportunity

The Promise of Continued Blessings

The beautiful thing about starting good habits in Muharram is that they donโ€™t have to end when the month ends. The fasting you do, the charity you give, the Quran you read โ€“ these can become part of your daily life.
Allah loves consistency. He prefers actions that are small but continuous over actions that are big but temporary. Use Muharram to build a relationship with Allah that lasts all year.

Your Invitation to Paradise

Muharram is Allahโ€™s invitation to you. Heโ€™s saying: โ€œCome closer to Me. Let Me forgive your sins. Let Me multiply your rewards. Let Me guide you to Jannah.โ€
This invitation doesnโ€™t come with complicated requirements. It doesnโ€™t need expensive preparations. It just needs a sincere heart and the willingness to try.
The gates of mercy are open during this sacred month. The angels are ready to carry your prayers to Allah. The rewards are waiting to be claimed. The only question is: Will you accept the invitation?

Your Legacy in This Sacred Month

Every good deed you do in Muharram becomes part of your legacy. Your fasting inspires others to fast. Your charity encourages others to give. Your prayers motivate others to pray. Your good example spreads like ripples in water.
Years from now, when you meet Allah, He might say: โ€œRemember that Muharram when you changed your life? Remember when you started taking your faith seriously? That was the beginning of your journey to Jannah.โ€
Donโ€™t let this Muharram pass without making it special. Donโ€™t let these sacred days become ordinary days. Donโ€™t let this opportunity slip away.
Fast for Allahโ€™s pleasure. Give for Allahโ€™s reward. Pray for Allahโ€™s mercy. Remember Allahโ€™s greatness. This is your month. This is your chance. This is your path to Jannah.
May Allah accept your efforts in this sacred month, multiply your rewards, and make you among those who will be under His shade on the Day of Judgment. Ameen.
